On July 14, 2026, the U.S. government executed a transfer of $12.36 million in cryptocurrencies, including ether (ETH), USD Coin (USDC), and Tether (USDT). This transaction, occurring in six distinct operations, was facilitated through a wallet associated with the Department of Justice and linked to the 2016 Bitfinex hack.

The bulk of the transfer involved sending 5,939 ETH, valued at approximately $11.15 million, to Coinbase Prime. Additionally, another ETH transaction of $11.26 was directed to the same exchange. The USDT component included a transfer of $296,710, complemented by a smaller amount of $10 sent to Coinbase as well.

In contrast, the USDC was sent to an unidentified address: 0x7D7C1C4c, which Arkham Intelligence has yet to classify. This transfer involved a preliminary transaction of $10 before the main transfer of $901,005 in USDC.

Transaction Details and Patterns

Each of the cryptocurrency transfers adhered to a consistent pattern where a nominal transaction amount preceded the main transfer. This method serves as a verification step to confirm the accuracy of the receiving address prior to moving larger sums, ensuring the security of the operation.

Coinbase Prime functions primarily as a custody and trading platform for institutional clients, suggesting that these funds may be earmarked for potential trades or secure storage. Meanwhile, the USDC transfer's divergence from the established pattern could indicate a shift to another custody account or an unidentified exchange.

This latest action comes on the heels of a significant transfer on the previous day, where approximately 3,941 BTC was also directed to Coinbase Prime. Together, these transactions represent a marked increase in on-chain activity for wallets associated with past criminal seizures.

The U.S. government's cryptocurrency holdings encompass around $21.22 billion across 618 addresses, with this transfer representing a mere 0.06% of that total value. The ongoing activity reflects a strategic approach to the management of these assets.
