In a recent analysis, blockchain data provider Nansen revealed that former President Donald Trump profited $636 million from his TRUMP memecoin, while investors collectively incurred losses exceeding $3.8 billion. This stark contrast highlights a significant disparity between Trump's earnings and the financial plight of his supporters.
Investor Losses and Earnings Breakdown
Nansen's findings indicate that nearly 989,000 wallets were affected, with a total loss of $3.81 billion reported by the end of June. Of these wallets, around two-thirds are currently underwater, while less than 500,000 managed to achieve profits amounting to approximately $4 billion. The profits appear to stem primarily from early investors and automated traders, who sold during the token's price surge.
The TRUMP token itself has experienced significant volatility, trading at around $1.76 recently, which is approximately 97% lower than its peak price of $75.35 reached just prior to Trump's second inauguration. Launched three days before the inauguration, the coin was heavily promoted on Truth Social as a means for supporters to engage with Trump's political community.
Economic Context and Market Structure
The difference in financial outcomes is attributed to the coin's trading structure, whereby Trump gained revenue from trading activity independent of the token's price movement. Trump's financial disclosure indicates that he reported over $1.4 billion in crypto-related income for the year, which constitutes more than half of his total reported earnings of $2.2 billion. This substantial income includes $635 million in memecoin royalties and $527 million from token sales by World Liberty Financial.
The prospects for World Liberty Financial's buyers present a more pessimistic picture, with Nansen's research revealing that around 85% of the 26,663 tracked wallets incurred losses averaging approximately $83. These findings have since revived calls among Senate Democrats for stricter ethics regulations surrounding the currently pending crypto market structure bill.
