Ether (ETH), Binance Coin (BNB), and Solana (SOL) top the newly launched S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index, a benchmark focused on crypto assets that generate consistent revenue. This index, developed by S&P Dow Jones Indices in collaboration with Pantera Capital, aims to provide institutional investors with a structured tool to track a broader range of digital assets beyond traditional market cap-weighted indexes.

The index contains 18 tokens selected through a rigorous screening process that evaluates market capitalization, liquidity, and especially protocol-level revenue. To qualify, new assets must have a market cap exceeding $500 million and meet a liquidity threshold, while existing constituents need at least $250 million in market cap. The goal is to represent 99% of total revenue within the eligible crypto universe.

Selection and Weighting Criteria

Assets considered for the index are initially drawn from the S&P Cryptocurrency Broad Digital Asset Index. Each candidate then undergoes additional eligibility checks emphasizing economic activity, measured over the last two quarters using Artemis data, which tracks protocol revenue.

The index weights constituents based on adjusted market capitalization but caps the largest holding at 35% and limits others to 20% at rebalancing periods. This approach differentiates it from indexes mainly weighted by market cap or dominated by Bitcoin.

Index Composition and Purpose

The top five holdings reflect projects with strong recurring economic activity: ETH, BNB, SOL, TRON (TRX), and Hyperliquid (HYPE). This composition underlines the emphasis on tangible revenue streams in the crypto economy.

Cathy Clay, CEO of S&P Dow Jones Indices, described the index as a fundamentals-driven benchmark tailored for diversified portfolios, potentially serving as a foundation for active strategies and future index-based crypto investment products.

The launch on July 20-21 provides institutional investors with a disciplined framework to allocate digital assets, emphasizing quality and real-world utility. This move might reshape how investors assess crypto market opportunities by focusing on economic fundamentals.
