On July 1, 2026, Robinhood unveiled its latest venture into decentralized finance with the launch of Robinhood Wallet and Robinhood Chain, featuring a custom instance of Lighter, a decentralized perpetual futures trading engine.

This move differentiates Robinhood from merely listing tokens; it created a dedicated Lighter instance tailored to enhance the user experience, making it feel integral to the Robinhood platform rather than an additional feature.

Key Features of Lighter

Lighter employs zk-rollup technology, handling transactions off-chain before settling them in batches on-chain. Following the announcement, Lighter achieved approximately $1.3 billion in trading volume by July 7, 2026, ranking it as the third-largest decentralized exchange for perpetuals by volume. In November 2025, Lighter secured $68 million in funding at a $1.5 billion valuation.

Users can conduct trades of perpetual contracts and tokenized stocks via the Robinhood Wallet, utilizing USDG as collateral. As an incentive, trades executed through Robinhood Wallet will earn a 2x rewards multiplier, surpassing the 1x rate typically offered in the Lighter app.

Token Allocation and Market Restrictions

Lighter has allocated $11 million in $LIT tokens to the Robinhood community, which saw a price increase of approximately 35% within a week of the announcement. However, several key markets including the US, UK, Canada, Switzerland, UAE, and Singapore impose restrictions on perpetual contracts, meaning a significant portion of Robinhood’s existing user base will not have access to these features at launch.

This development allows Lighter to tap into Robinhood's nearly 28 million users, many of whom are newcomers to decentralized exchanges. Meanwhile, Robinhood acquires a credible on-chain offering without the need to develop the underlying matching engine and settlement infrastructure independently. Should perpetual trading become accessible in the US or UK, it could broaden the market considerably.
