The Robinhood Chain project has highlighted the revenue generated by Layer 2 blockchains on Ethereum, revealing a disparity between user fees and what Ethereum receives.
According to recent statistics, user fees reached $843,000, while Ethereum received approximately $1,600 for settlement and data availability. This has led some critics to argue that Robinhood Chain contributes little to Ethereum's ecosystem.
Revenue Breakdown
Crypto analyst Lorenzo Valente noted that Robinhood Chain recorded around $816,000 in revenue, with Ethereum costs slightly varying at about $1,538. Valente's analysis indicates that Robinhood captures 89% of the total revenue generated, while Arbitrum takes in around 10%, leaving Ethereum with only 0.15% of the transaction activity.
Robinhood Chain, built on Arbitrum technology, routes transactions to the Ethereum blockchain for finalization. The protocol allocates 10% of its revenue to the Arbitrum ecosystem, with 8% going to the DAO treasury and 2% designated for developer funding.
Despite the limited financial inflow, the Robinhood Chain is seen as supporting the broader Layer 2 dialogue, especially as increased transaction volumes could raise demand for ETH as gas, collateral, and for settlement purposes. However, the majority of user fees remain with Layer 2 chains.
On July 1, Robinhood launched the public mainnet of the Robinhood Chain, designed to operate as an Ethereum Layer 2 network for real assets. The chain's introduction coincided with Robinhood's rollout of Stock Tokens, allowing users to trade assets globally, which may enhance Ethereum's ecosystem through increased participation.
Joe Lubin, a prominent figure in the Ethereum community, has expressed support for maintaining low fees on Ethereum Layer 1. He argues that lower fees could encourage more companies to utilize both the mainnet and Layer 2 networks, potentially driving demand for ETH as a gas, collateral, and staking asset.
