Ripple has officially become a primary member of the x402 Foundation, an initiative aimed at establishing open payment standards for AI agents and web applications. This collaboration, confirmed by the Linux Foundation, follows the transfer of the x402 protocol, initially developed by Coinbase, to the foundation.

With the launch of this organization, which operates under unbiased governance, the x402 Foundation is set to create a standard that enables AI agents and applications to execute financial transactions as smoothly as they share data. The x402 protocol integrates secure payment infrastructure directly into HTTP-based internet transactions, allowing automated systems to carry out payments for services or pay for API access.

The rise of AI in transaction processes necessitates the development of fast and reliable payment systems. Ripple noted its preparedness in this area, leveraging its XRP Ledger to facilitate transactions using XRP and RLUSD, particularly as AI agents increasingly engage in financial interactions. RippleX Senior Vice President Markus Infanger emphasized the importance of open standards, which underpin dependable machine-to-machine payments.

To reinforce its role in this evolving landscape, Ripple will contribute to the technical and governance initiatives of the x402 Foundation. This step is aimed at ensuring consistent and effective application of these emerging standards across the payment industry.
