Polymarket is in early-stage talks to raise roughly $1 billion at a valuation topping $20 billion, Bloomberg reported on August 4. The figure marks a sharp jump from April's $15 billion valuation, when D.E. Shaw and G Squared joined the investor roster. But here's the catch: no deal is finalized yet, no term sheet exists, and the company declined to comment on the reports.
The Valuation Race
A successful raise would position Polymarket inches away from Kalshi, the prediction market heavyweight that landed a $22 billion valuation in May. Both platforms are riding a wave of expansion beyond election contracts into sports, economics, crypto markets and other real-world events. July alone saw prediction market volume hit $50.6 billion across all platforms, with Kalshi capturing $37.7 billion of that.
The numbers are staggering but also muddied. Bloomberg cited Polymarket at roughly $9 billion in October 2025, while Intercontinental Exchange's official announcement pegged an earlier investment at approximately $8 billion before new capital was factored in. These figures may use different valuation bases, making direct comparison tricky.
ICE's Growing Bet
Intercontinental Exchange, the New York Stock Exchange owner, has become Polymarket's heavyweight backer. ICE invested $1 billion in October 2025, then added another $600 million in March 2025 as part of an equity raise. That's $1.6 billion deployed in less than six months, signaling serious conviction about the prediction market's long-term play.
Meanwhile, Polymarket US operates through QCX, a CFTC-designated market, even as state regulators have challenged federal authority over the platform. The company even took France to court after local regulators blocked the website, underscoring the regulatory friction around prediction markets globally.
Why Early Stage Matters
Preliminary talks can shift dramatically before closing. Investor groups can change, capital amounts can shrink, valuations can be renegotiated. The company has released no term sheet, closing date or final list of backers. Until an announcement lands, the reported numbers remain exactly what they are: preliminary chatter from people with knowledge of private discussions.
