Messari data just dropped a sobering reality check for crypto investors. Out of 187 tokens that outperformed Bitcoin at the peak of the 2020-21 bull run, only one still has the edge today. That token is OKB, the exchange coin from OKX.

The numbers tell the story. Of that original 187 winners, 86% have cratered by at least 90% from their peaks. The survivors that pop up occasionally, like NEAR, Render, and Hyperliquid, manage it only in short bursts and mostly because they didn't exist during the last cycle.

Over the past 24 months alone, just 22 tokens beat Bitcoin's returns. That's a massive contraction from the sprawl of the 2021 market. The list keeps rotating faster every year, with coins that led the charge in previous cycles fading hard.

Exchange tokens dominated the 22-token overperformers, claiming 32% of the group. BNB, OKB, GT, LEO, BGB, WBT, MX, and CAKE all made the cut. Only one DEX token cracked the list, and that was PancakeSwap's CAKE. The rest of the winners came from a mix of old-school names like ETH and SOL, a handful of meme projects, and whatever happened to rally hardest this cycle.

What sets OKB apart isn't just that it's winning now. It's the staying power. OKB has held its advantage over Bitcoin since November 2021, longer than any other token that's still in the game. Seven out of ten tokens that hit the top 100 end up dead, so the fact that an exchange token is outrunning Bitcoin for years straight is almost an anomaly.

The broader takeaway stings. If you picked the 187 winners from 2021, you'd need to have held OKB to still be ahead of Bitcoin today. Everything else got crushed, and the new winners are mostly projects that didn't even exist when the last bull market peaked.
