Moonshot AI, a Beijing-based artificial intelligence startup, suspended new subscriptions to its latest Kimi K3 model over the weekend of July 19-20 due to overwhelming demand exceeding its compute infrastructure capacity.

Surging Demand for Kimi K3 Model

The Kimi K3, launched on July 16-17, features 2.8 trillion parameters and open-weight architecture, allowing researchers to inspect and modify its internals. Following its release, daily sales increased at least sixfold, pushing Moonshot’s annual recurring revenue (ARR) to $300 million.

This subscription freeze only affects new users; current paid subscribers maintain access, indicating the measure is aimed at managing resources rather than technical issues. Moonshot plans to release the full Kimi K3 weights as open source by the end of July, which is expected to further boost developer interest.

IPO Plans Target $30 Billion Valuation

Moonshot is preparing for a Hong Kong initial public offering within six months, aiming for a valuation above $30 billion. This represents a significant increase from its previous $20 billion valuation during funding rounds backed by investors such as Meituan, Alibaba, and Tencent. The company has raised about $2 billion in total funding to date.

Founded in 2023 by Yang Zhilin, former Google Brain and Meta engineer, Moonshot’s $300 million ARR positions it ahead of many AI startups that have yet to achieve monetization. The targeted IPO valuation implies an approximate 100x revenue multiple. The upcoming IPO filing will offer detailed insights into Moonshot’s financials, compute expenses, and unit economics.
