Mastercard and Borderless.xyz launched a live pilot Wednesday using the card giant's Crypto Credential system to streamline compliance verification for stablecoin payments across borders. Three payment operators, Infinia, Walapay, and Koywe, are running the first transactions under what the companies call a single-audit compliance model.

The core problem the pilot targets is straightforward: every new payment provider in a stablecoin network triggers fresh compliance checks. That overhead kills scalability. Crypto Credential flips the approach. Instead of re-verifying at each hop, the system generates standardized compliance signals that downstream participants can trust and reuse, much like correspondent banking in traditional finance has worked for decades.

"One of the biggest friction points for stablecoin payment operators isn't the payments," Kevin Lehtiniitty, CEO of Borderless.xyz, told The Defiant. "It's that compliance doesn't scale the same way the network does." The company's network connects wallet infrastructure to over 15 licensed stablecoin providers across 100+ countries through a single API. Borderless.xyz raised $3 million in pre-seed funding in October 2024.

The pilot runs live from day one with no sandbox phase and no set expiration date. Whether it becomes permanent depends on participation levels and transaction volume. Stablecoins in circulation now total about $308 billion, with Tether's USDT at $183 billion and Circle's USDC at $72 billion.
