Justin Sun, a Chinese entrepreneur born in 1990, founded TRON in 2017 and has since become a notable figure in the cryptocurrency sector, with ventures valued in the hundreds of millions. His career includes significant acquisitions such as BitTorrent for roughly $140 million and a controlling stake in Poloniex, alongside launching innovative projects like the USDD stablecoin.
Early Career and Academic Background
Sun was born in Qinghai province and completed a bachelor’s degree in History at Peking University in 2011. He then pursued a master’s degree in East Asian Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 2013. Following his studies, he attended Hupan University, an entrepreneurship program led by Alibaba’s Jack Ma, where he authored a thesis titled "The Birth of a Decentralized Internet" and became the first millennial alumnus of the institution. Around 2013, Sun contributed to Ripple Labs as an advisor, assisting in establishing connections with Chinese fintech companies. In 2014, he launched Peiwo, an audio-based social app that combined dating with live-streaming chat, attracting 10 million users.
TRON Foundation and Ecosystem Growth
Sun founded TRON with an initial coin offering during August and September 2017, allocating 34% of TRX’s total supply to the TRON Foundation, which later became TRON DAO. Despite early reputational setbacks due to plagiarism accusations in TRON’s English technical documentation, the network expanded steadily. By late 2025, TRON was processing around 10 million transactions per day, largely fueled by its low fees and heavy use in stablecoin transfers.
Acquisitions, Security Incidents, and Stablecoin Launch
In August 2018, Sun acquired BitTorrent through Rainberry Inc. and launched the BTT token, distributing it to TRX holders via airdrops. The following year, he gained control of Poloniex after a deal with Circle. Poloniex suffered a major hack in November 2023, resulting in losses exceeding $100 million; Sun committed to fully compensating affected users, a promise the exchange later confirmed was fulfilled. In 2022, Sun became a Global Advisor to Huobi, which rebranded as HTX in 2023, through an investment entity named About Capital Management. HTX faced several security breaches between 2023 and 2024. Also in May 2022, TRON DAO Reserve launched USDD, an algorithmic stablecoin pegged to the US dollar and backed by reserves including TRX, BTC, and USDT. USDD later expanded its presence onto Ethereum’s blockchain.
