Monero hit $798.91 in January 2026, marking its highest price ever. That milestone matters less than what happened next: the network activated FCMP++ in May, a technical upgrade that could reshape how the coin handles transaction secrecy. Meanwhile, Zcash and Dash are moving in entirely different directions, each solving privacy differently. The gap between these projects has never been wider.

Public blockchains record everything. Surveillance companies now track behavioral patterns, link exchange accounts to blockchain addresses, and map how users interact with networks over time. This cat-and-mouse game has pushed privacy coin developers to choose their own path. Some prioritize absolute confidentiality. Others layer privacy on top of speed and liquidity. A few target smart contracts and data processing instead of payments.

Three categories, three strategies

Privacy coins are not one thing anymore. Monero and Zcash pioneered private payments, but they use completely different cryptography. Monero makes privacy mandatory, hiding the sender, receiver, and amount on every single transaction using ring signatures, stealth addresses, and RingCT. Zcash lets users choose between transparent and shielded transactions, meaning privacy is optional. Dash and Litecoin (with Mimblewimble coming) sit elsewhere, offering privacy as a secondary feature built on top of transparent blockchains.

Then there are privacy-focused smart contract platforms. Railgun, Aztec, Secret Network, and Oasis do not compete with Monero for payments at all. They handle DeFi applications and private data processing without exposing everything on-chain. These are infrastructure plays, not currencies.

Each category faces different regulatory risks, different liquidity profiles, and different adoption curves. Lumping them together as "privacy coins" obscures what actually makes them work.

The technical divide

Monero's mandatory privacy means every transaction is private by default. No user can accidentally reveal themselves. The trade-off is complexity and scalability. The FCMP++ upgrade arriving on mainnet would improve efficiency, but Monero remains computationally heavier than Bitcoin or Ethereum.

Zcash's optional privacy gives users control. Shielded transactions hide data, transparent ones do not. This flexibility attracted regulatory scrutiny early, but it also preserved the option for users to stay private on their own terms. The network has been exploring zero-knowledge proofs and other cryptographic primitives to strengthen privacy layers.

Hybrid models like Dash prioritize transaction speed and merchant adoption. Privacy comes later, if at all. These coins compete on liquidity and exchange support, not on cryptographic innovation. Their regulatory position is cleaner because privacy is not built into the core protocol.
