Hashdex Asset Management is closing its DEFI spot Bitcoin ETF. Trading stops August 17, 2026. Holders will get cash distributions around August 28.
The fund never gained traction. By late July it held roughly 225 Bitcoin and $14.7 million in assets, a fraction of what competitors commanded. Hashdex decided to shut down after reviewing trading liquidity, operating costs, and the simple fact that investors weren't showing up.
This marks the end of a two-year grind to compete in America's Bitcoin ETF space. DEFI launched in 2022 as a futures product before converting to spot Bitcoin tracking in later years. Even at its peak in May 2025, the fund barely cracked $17.5 million. That's pocket change compared to rivals.
The Bitcoin ETF market has been ruthlessly concentrated since spot approvals started in January 2024. BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust vacuumed up most new money and trading volume. By the time Hashdex joined the party, ten competitors were already there. WisdomTree Bitcoin Trust, the next-smallest comparable fund, sat at $140.37 million in assets, nearly ten times larger.
Shareholders won't be able to hold Bitcoin through another ETF wrapper. Hashdex plans to sell holdings on the open market and hand over cash instead. Anyone still holding at closure gets proceeds based on the fund's final net asset value after fees. That liquidation could trigger tax events for some investors.
