Grayscale Investments reweighted its Smart Contract Fund in August, and the shuffle was brutal for some. BNB claimed the top spot with a 30.6% allocation, squeezing Ethereum down to 29.47% and Solana to 29.15%. The changes took effect August 3 after the asset manager's second-quarter rebalance announcement.
On paper, the margin looks razor-thin. ETH and SOL barely budged from their previous positions. Yet losing the top slot matters for fund composition signals and the psychology of institutional positioning. The fund follows market-cap-weighted rules with quarterly reviews, meaning Grayscale wasn't making a directional bet so much as mechanically rebalancing to index rules.
Cardano Takes the Heaviest Hit
The real damage landed elsewhere. Cardano got gutted. Its weighting collapsed from 17.96% in May to just 4.88% by August. Grayscale trimmed several holdings proportionally to fund the BNB purchase, but ADA absorbed the sharpest cut by far. Hedera, Avalanche, and Sui each dropped below 2.1%, essentially becoming rounding errors in the fund.
The rebalance mechanics are straightforward. Grayscale sold existing fund components across their respective weightings, then deployed the proceeds into BNB. This wasn't a tactical call from the asset manager, just the mechanical outcome of quarterly recalibration against the underlying index.
DeFi and AI Funds Reshaped Too
The August update touched three funds instead of the usual two. The Decentralized Finance Fund saw Ondo surge from 19.83% to 25.44%, vaulting past Aave into the second position. Uniswap held the lead at 34.16% despite Grayscale reducing its position. The Decentralized AI Fund, now included in the quarterly reviews, sits behind Near Protocol at 31.35%, with Bittensor close behind at 29.15%.
These moves reflect how quarterly rebalancing can shift the competitive hierarchy among crypto assets. A fund's index weights matter for retail psychology and the signals they send about which protocols are gaining market-cap dominance. For BNB, Ondo, and Near, the visibility bump from these allocations carries real marketing value in an ecosystem where fund holdings often drive narrative.
