Galaxy Digital and BNY Mellon just rolled staking capabilities into BNY's Digital Asset Custody platform, though the feature still needs regulatory sign-off before institutional clients can use it. The move signals how quickly traditional finance is building out crypto infrastructure for serious money.
Here's what matters: institutions have been sitting on digital assets but couldn't stake them easily through custodians. Staking generates yield by locking tokens into blockchain networks, and it's where real returns hide in crypto. Now BNY is solving that problem by embedding staking directly into the custody layer, so clients don't have to move coins to separate platforms and expose themselves to additional counterparty risk.
BNY also launched a blockchain-based transfer agency platform designed to handle on-chain shareholder records for tokenized investment funds. The infrastructure tracks transactions and ownership on-chain, cutting out paper trails and settlement delays that plagued traditional finance for decades. Galaxy stepped in as BNY's infrastructure design partner to help scale these institutional digital asset operations.
This isn't the first time Wall Street has rushed to own blockchain settlement. Wells Fargo launched tokenized deposits earlier this year, and the pattern is clear: custody plus settlement plus yield generation equals the future of institutional crypto. BNY is playing catch-up but doing it methodically, building for scale rather than speed.
Staking infrastructure has been fragmented. Retail users scattered across Lido, Rocket Pool, and exchange platforms. Institutions need something different, something that doesn't move their assets off the books. Galaxy and BNY are betting that bundling staking into custody is the answer.
The platform still waits on regulatory approval, which could take months. When it lands, eligible institutional clients get access to staking rewards without operational friction.
