CoinShares has introduced a Bitcoin mining ETF under a new UCITS platform, debuting on Deutsche Börse Xetra on Tuesday. This move allows institutional investors in Europe, such as pension funds, insurers, and private banks, to access CoinShares' digital asset strategies through a regulated structure that fits their mandates.

UCITS Market Entry and Institutional Access

UCITS, standing for Undertakings for the Collective Investment in Transferable Securities, is the European framework for investment funds accepted across member states. Many institutional investors prefer UCITS-compliant products due to internal rules, which previously hindered access to digital asset funds like those from CoinShares.

CoinShares stated that prior prohibitions against investing in debt securities and physical asset-backed exchange-traded products excluded a large group of institutions from participating in their strategies despite growing sector interest. The UCITS platform removes this barrier, enabling regulated digital asset investment products to be offered within accepted guidelines.

Jean-Marie Mognetti, CoinShares co-founder, president, and CEO, emphasized that this launch is more than a product release: it marks the company’s entry into a widely recognized fund structure that supports launching multiple future regulated digital asset funds under one platform.

The platform operates on a mostly fixed cost basis and aims to achieve operating use as additional funds are introduced, covering both digital asset offerings and thematic investment strategies.

This initiative reflects a broader trend of regulated digital finance products gaining traction with institutional capital in Europe.
