Coinbase product lead Jordan Fish, known as Cobie, acknowledged the company has drifted away from crypto-native users following trust issues in the Base ecosystem. This admission came as he assumed control over the Base App and Coinbase's trading products.

Leadership Shift and Strategy Reset

Days before Cobie's statement, Jesse Pollak handed over the Base App leadership to Cobie to concentrate fully on the Base blockchain. Pollak's departure from the app's management followed underwhelming growth from Base's focus on social products. Now, Cobie manages the Base App alongside Coinbase's broader trading platform, including advanced services.

The shift corresponds with a broader change in Base's product direction after Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong conceded that the project had made significant errors. Cobie clarified he does not oversee the Base blockchain itself, which remains Pollak's focus.

Addressing User Trust and Community Criticism

Crypto commentator Rune publicly questioned how the Base App intends to attract onchain users amid persistent community distrust. Rune emphasized that despite Base's strong infrastructure, user acquisition faces challenges without altering team engagement with the community.

Cobie responded by admitting Coinbase operated somewhat detached from its core audience, describing the company as having been in an "ivory tower." He acknowledged that avoidable mistakes eroded trust, and rebuilding it would require more than weeks or months.

He pledged to listen more attentively to onchain users and strengthen the connection between product developers and Coinbase's user base.

  • Base App leadership transferred from Pollak to Cobie.
  • Focus shift from social features to trading and onchain activities.
  • Ongoing community skepticism about management decisions.
  • Cobie aims to restore trust through closer user engagement.
