Cardano will transition control of key blockchain components, such as its Haskell node, the Plutus platform, and the Daedalus wallet, to external teams, starting in August. This shift aims to enhance decentralization, as noted by founder Charles Hoskinson during the announcement.
The responsibility for these integral components will be handed over to independent teams like Se7en Labs and Teragone. Se7en Labs specializes in Solana infrastructure, while Teragone focuses on cryptographic development, including the Mithril signature protocol. The transfer will be gradual, continuing through 2027.
Input Output, the main developer of Cardano, stated that this move marks the next significant phase towards decentralization. It follows previous steps of shifting governance and protocol decisions to the community. The focus will now shift to distributing responsibilities for software development and maintenance across a broader spectrum of contributors.
According to Hoskinson, this action represents the final stage of the Voltaire era, which emphasizes complete decentralization of node and reference blueprint development. The plan will maintain at least three versions of Cardano systems coded in Haskell, Rust, and Go, with oversight from community members and organizations like Intersect and Pragma.
The announcement arrives at a challenging time for Cardano, as network activity has declined significantly, reflected in the drop in the ADA token's market price, which has struggled against a backdrop of weak transactional volume. Currently, the network handles transactions worth only about $70 million.
As a result of the ongoing decentralization efforts, Input Output intends to concentrate on research and new ventures through IO Labs and IO Ventures, suggesting a strategic pivot as the company reduces its hands-on management of the Cardano ecosystem. The approach signals a commitment to a more distributed model of governance and infrastructure management.
