Bitget has set November 1, 2026, as the deadline for Japanese users to complete Level 2 identity verification. After that date, any accounts unverified or flagged as Japanese residents will face service restrictions. The exchange stopped new Japanese registrations back on August 3 following a compliance review, signaling an end to its operations for this market.
Users must verify their residence details with documents proving their current location. Accounts without this verification will be treated as Japanese residents and gradually lose access to services. Bitget plans to provide detailed instructions via email to guide users through these changes.
After December 31, 2026, any open positions still held by Japanese accounts will be forcibly closed. This means traders have less than two months to manage leveraged trades, derivatives, and transfer assets before full suspension. The cutoff comes amid prior warnings from Japanese regulators about Bitget offering crypto services without proper registration.
This move reflects growing regulatory pressure on crypto platforms in Japan, a trend also impacting other exchanges adapting to strict local rules.
