Bitcoin is up over 2% in August, snapping a four-year losing streak that haunted this month since 2021. From 2022 to 2025, August averaged losses near 10%. This year feels different.
Spot Bitcoin ETFs have pulled in $381 million in net inflows so far, the strongest start to any month since April. More striking, the funds haven't posted a single outflow day yet. Institutions aren't fading the seasonal weakness, they're building into it.
On-chain signals support the shift. Bitcoin dominance, which measures BTC's share of total crypto market cap, has started climbing after months below the 60% resistance. Ethereum dominance peaked in July with an 11% monthly gain, its best since August 2025, but momentum stalled in early August. ETH.D already hit rejection at 10.4%, while Bitcoin's share of the pie expanded. Capital is rotating back.
The macro backdrop turned risk-on. President Trump's comments about surging manufacturing and stock market records at all-time highs created favorable conditions for assets tied to growth. That sentiment flowed into crypto flows. Bitcoin ETFs broke an eight-week slump as institutions resumed accumulation, and the move happened across spot funds with no institutional hesitation.
Bitcoin has held above $60,000 despite early Q3 selling pressure. The real test comes if this inflow momentum sustains through month's end. If it does, August 2025 becomes the first positive month in the post-2021 cycle. The data suggests institutions believe it's possible.
