Bank of America has maintained a 'Buy' rating on Amazon, setting a price target of $310 for its stock. The firm highlights Amazon Web Services (AWS) as a significant player expected to outperform competitors in AI data center capacity over the next few years.
According to BofA, AWS is on track to add around 15 gigawatts (GW) of AI data center capacity in 2026 and 2027, surpassing Alphabet’s 9GW and Meta’s 6GW in the same timeframe. By 2030, Amazon's total installed capacity is forecasted to reach approximately 58GW, well ahead of its rivals.
Significance of AWS's Competitive Edge
Analysts from Bank of America attribute AWS’s competitive advantage to its cost efficiency and technological capabilities. BofA estimates it costs AWS about $25 billion to add one GW of capacity, which is notably lower than Alphabet's cost of approximately $37 billion and Meta's at about $45 billion. Key factors contributing to this cost efficiency include:
- Use of custom Trainium and Graviton chips
- Scalability of operations
- Diverse cloud workload management
Furthermore, BofA has increased its 2027 capital spending forecast for AWS from $196 billion to $230 billion, reflecting additional demand evidenced by reports of AWS requesting a 30% increase in server shipments for the third quarter.
Demand in the AI sector remains strong, particularly for training, inference, and internal AI products, which has resulted in supply constraints that support continued investment in AWS capabilities.
Continued Confidence from Analysts
Additionally, Needham has reaffirmed its 'Buy' rating for Amazon and set a $300 target price, citing robust demand for AWS compute. The firm indicated that Amazon’s $25 billion debt raise serves as a signal of ongoing strong demand for AWS services, and has suggested prioritizing AWS investments over other capital projects.
Amazon’s return on invested capital stands at 13%, and the company maintains a debt-to-equity ratio of 0.53. Recently, AWS announced several product updates, including new AI features integrated into Amazon Bedrock.
Future Outlook and Monitoring Points
Investors should stay tuned for upcoming developments in AWS's capacity expansion and product enhancements. Potential changes in the technology landscape and Amazon's strategic decisions may significantly impact its market position.
