Arthur Madrid, the co-founder of The Sandbox, has shifted to a non-executive chairman role following the platform's substantial restructuring in August 2025. Madrid previously served as CEO since October 2018, guiding the virtual gaming platform to significant success in the NFT space.
Madrid's Professional Journey
Before entering the blockchain industry, Madrid spent nearly twenty years in consumer internet and mobile product development. He earned a master’s degree in Economics from Paris Dauphine University in 2000 and began his career at Eurogroup Consulting in France.
In November 2001, he founded 1-Click Media, which was sold to Ipercast in 2006. He later launched Wixi.com, a media-sharing platform, before establishing Pixowl with Sébastien Borget in 2011, which developed family-friendly mobile games.
The Sandbox's Rise
Under Madrid's leadership, The Sandbox emerged as a key player in the NFT gaming sector. The platform's utility token, SAND, achieved a valuation surpassing $1.5 billion, and it engaged major brands and celebrities through the sale of virtual LAND during the metaverse expansion in 2021 and 2022.
Role at Animoca Brands
Madrid joined the board of Animoca Brands in March 2019, contributing to the company’s investment strategy in Web3 gaming, which includes popular projects like Axie Infinity. Following the restructuring of The Sandbox, Animoca executive Robby Yung has been appointed as the new CEO.
