Arthur Hayes, the mastermind behind the perpetual swap that revolutionized crypto derivatives, once said, «This is not just innovation, it is a transformation of how markets function.» Hayes' invention made BitMEX a leading exchange by volume, reshaping crypto trading with contracts that have no expiration date and employ a funding-rate system to track asset prices. His impact remains evident as nearly every major exchange, including Binance and Bybit, has adopted the perpetual swap model.
Born in Detroit in 1985 and educated at the Wharton School, Hayes began his finance career in Asia, working at Deutsche Bank and Citibank before being laid off in 2013. That setback pushed him to explore Bitcoin seriously. In 2014, alongside Ben Delo and Samuel Reed experts in mathematics and software engineering they launched BitMEX aiming to provide traders with more advanced derivatives options than existing spot exchanges. Within a year, BitMEX processed over a billion dollars in volume, rapidly gaining industry prominence.
In October 2020, Hayes stepped down as BitMEX CEO following U.S. regulatory charges under the Bank Secrecy Act for running an unregistered trading platform. He pleaded guilty and received six months of home confinement, two years of probation, and a $10 million fine. In 2025, former President Donald Trump granted him a pardon. Today, Hayes directs Maelstrom, his family office, continuing to influence crypto markets with his analysis and insights.
Hayes’ journey from a bank trader in Asia to a crypto innovator and later to a high-profile figure navigating legal challenges demonstrates the evolving landscape of crypto regulation and market adaptation. His story parallels ongoing issues faced by crypto firms worldwide as regulators increase scrutiny.
