Alexis Ohanian, known for co-founding Reddit, has established himself as a significant figure in the cryptocurrency investment landscape. As one of the initial institutional supporters of Coinbase, Ohanian invested in the exchange through his venture firm Initialized Capital prior to its public offering in 2021.
Background and Education
Born on April 24, 1983, in Brooklyn, New York, Ohanian grew up in Columbia, Maryland. He attended Howard High School before pursuing studies in commerce and history at the University of Virginia, graduating in 2005. While in college, he and his roommate Steve Huffman presented a mobile food-ordering concept to Y Combinator's Paul Graham, who ultimately encouraged them to create a different project, leading to the launch of Reddit in 2005.
Path to Venture Capital
After selling Reddit to Condé Nast in 2006 for an estimated $10 million to $20 million, Ohanian rejoined the company as executive chairman in 2014, later stepping back from daily operations in 2018 to focus on venture capital. In 2011, he co-founded Initialized Capital, which became known for investing in technology startups such as Coinbase, Instacart, and more. Ohanian eventually left Initialized in 2020 to start Seven Seven Six. His new venture has since redirected most of its investments towards crypto and Web3 startups, raising $500 million in 2022 across two funds.
Focus on Crypto and Web3
Seven Seven Six has built a diverse portfolio, including investments in QuickNode and Yuga Labs, the latter being known for creating the Bored Ape Yacht Club. Ohanian frames this strategic focus on crypto not as a dogmatic approach but as a response to where talented founders are choosing to innovate. In a 2022 interview, he emphasized that a substantial portion of future investments would be directed towards cryptocurrency, while still valuing the insights from individual founders.
Personal Life and Broader Interests
Apart from his tech ventures, Ohanian is widely recognized as the husband of tennis icon Serena Williams. In 2025, he co-purchased Digg with its original founder, Kevin Rose, and acquired a minority stake in Chelsea Women’s Football Club.
