Thirty-seven people have been arrested across the United States this year while protesting against artificial intelligence data centers. The arrests mark a significant escalation in demonstrations against the infrastructure powering the AI boom, with activists increasingly willing to face legal consequences to block construction and expansion plans.

The protests target the massive power demands of AI operations. Data centers consume enormous amounts of electricity, straining local grids and water supplies in communities where they're built. Some facilities use as much power as small cities, driving up energy costs for residents and forcing regional utilities to scramble for capacity.

Why communities are pushing back

Activists argue that Big Tech companies are externalizing the environmental and economic costs of AI development onto ordinary people. When a data center arrives, property taxes may rise, water becomes scarcer, and the grid gets strained. Yet profits flow to distant shareholders while locals deal with the fallout. The 37 arrests represent only the most visible confrontations. Dozens more demonstrations have occurred without arrests, as communities block access roads, occupy construction sites, and file legal challenges. Some protesters have chained themselves to equipment or occupied company offices.

Tech companies counter that data centers bring jobs and tax revenue. They've also started investing in renewable energy to power facilities.
